Is there Grab on Koh Lanta?

No. Grab doesn’t work on Koh Lanta, and neither does Bolt or any other ride-hailing app. The island is too small and too far from the mainland for any of them to operate here.

If you’re coming from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, or even Krabi town, you’re used to opening an app and having a car show up. That won’t happen here. Put the phone away and read on.

How people actually get around #

Most people rent a scooter. The island is about 30km from north to south, so even the longest ride takes maybe 40 minutes. Rentals run 250-300 THB per day, less if you’re renting by the month. There are rental shops everywhere, especially around Saladan.

If you don’t ride, or you’ve had a few drinks, you call a taxi driver directly. There’s no meter, no app, no middleman. You agree on a price over WhatsApp, they show up.

Expect to pay 200-500 THB depending on distance. Always agree on the fare before you get in.

Tuk-tuks are common around Saladan and the busier beaches, and easier to find than taxis. They’re fine for short hops but cost more per trip than calling a driver directly.

Can I take a Grab from Krabi to Koh Lanta? #

You can. Grab works in Krabi town, and some drivers will take you all the way to the island. Just know that it’s a bad deal for them. Once they drop you off, there’s nobody to pick up on the way back. That’s 2+ hours of empty driving on their dime.

If you go this route, tip well. Really well. Or consider getting dropped at the car ferry pier on the mainland side and grabbing a tuk-tuk once you cross. Saves the driver the dead return trip and you’ll still get to your hotel just fine.

Will Grab ever come to Koh Lanta? #

Probably not anytime soon. The island’s population is small, tourism is seasonal, and the roads are simple enough that the informal taxi system works. Koh Samui and Phuket have Grab because they’re big enough to sustain it. Lanta isn’t there yet.
